Pauline Tanaskovic’s memoir, Lenitive- Behind the Mask, was written to assuage her feelings following her decision to leave her husband, which also meant leaving her sons. This was in the 1950’s and 60’s, a time of stifling conformity, of unwritten rules and arcane regulations in South Australia. A time when the rights of women versus men were not a consideration, resulting in mother and sons having no contact for many years.
A story of her parents, grandparents, and the experiences of her own life from 1937 - to tell them all the things she missed telling them because she was not there - her part of their family history. She relates her life until 2005 where her own intuitive sense of independence and idealism was tested by realities.
This memoir was written with a hope that after reading it, her sons will better know their mother.
