Marie-Louise Dalle’s story
begins with the diary of her
father’s voyage on the s/s
Narkunda from Marseille to
Adelaide in 1933 when he was
21 years old. Later, he marries
Elza who had migrated to
Australia with her family in
the 30s depression. Together,
Auguste and Elza raise a family. Marie is
born during World War II, surrounded by the
affection of an extended family that included
a grandmother with a ‘sixth sense’, and a
grandfather with a great gift for storytelling.
Marie reminisces about going to school,
finding her calling as a teacher, marrying and
raising a family of her own. She returns to
teaching after her marriage breaks up, and in
1973 meets Domenic with whom she shares
her life.
Marie is now a proud grandmother, and her
book, A Lucky Life, demonstrates it is now
her turn to be the family storyteller.
