This is the amazing story of Charlotte Schmidt.
Beginning to write her story at age 84; Charlotte tells of her life with an engaging narrative and vivid details, that would have been forgotten but for her extraordinary memory. Growing up in Germany, after the first World War, Charlotte’s childhood was more often than not in impoverished circumstances.
Charlotte learns to be extremely resourceful.

Then the devastation of World War II in Europe reaches Germany, and in particular the port city of Hamburg where she lived. She marries then raises her children amidst the conflict, and through the allies and Russian invasion that followed, facing more atrocities. It was her resilience and strong survival instinct that saved her family.

After the war, money is even shorter because of her husband’s drinking habits, and to provide for her children, Charlotte secures a job in a film studio. This is where she discovers a wonderful new world of creativity and of lasting friendships.
In 1960, despite all odds, Charlotte starts a new life in Australia with her children and new partner, Būtz. They settle in Macedon, Victoria, where the couple become successful potters, never imagining the horrendous disaster that awaits them.

This is a story of great courage, devotion, and determination.
